Agentic commerce

If you run a Shopify store, your products may already be showing up in ChatGPT. Since March 2026, Shopify has listed eligible products from its merchants in ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog by default, and OpenAI has said no extra work is needed from individual Shopify merchants. At the same time, Shopify has opened MCP servers that let AI agents search a store's catalogue directly, and OpenAI lets brands build their own apps inside ChatGPT.
That is three different things with similar names. This guide explains how Shopify and ChatGPT connect today, what MCP and UCP actually do for a store, which settings you control, and what to fix so ChatGPT describes your products correctly. Every fact comes from Shopify's and OpenAI's own documentation, checked on 26 October 2026.
The short version
The default path is Shopify Catalog. Eligible products are shared with ChatGPT through Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, with no app to install. Shoppers buy on your own online store checkout, opened inside ChatGPT.
Checkout stays on your store. OpenAI moved away from its first Instant Checkout in March 2026 and now lets merchants use their own checkout. Shopify says merchants remain the merchant of record.
MCP is the plumbing, not a channel. Shopify's Storefront Catalog MCP lets any AI agent search one store's products. A ChatGPT app is a separate, deeper integration that a brand builds itself.
The ChatGPT channel is for US buyers. Your store can be based anywhere, including India, but Shopify's ChatGPT channel serves customers in the US.
Your product data decides how you are described. Titles, descriptions, options, images, price and availability flow from Shopify into ChatGPT, so thin or wrong product data is repeated at scale.
How Shopify products get into ChatGPT
There are three routes, and most stores use the first without knowing it.

Route 1: Shopify Catalog, on by default
Shopify's Agentic Storefronts give merchants access to AI channels from the Shopify admin. In its March 2026 announcement Shopify listed ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. Shopify's help centre says the ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores, and products are discovered through Shopify Catalog with no action needed.
OpenAI says the same from its side. Its 24 March 2026 post on product discovery states that for merchants on Shopify, product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and no additional work is required from individual merchants.
When a shopper chooses a product, ChatGPT opens your online store checkout in its in-app browser, or in a new tab on ChatGPT on the web. Shopify says your branding, selling strategies and payment methods carry over, and that there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond your standard payment processing fees.
Route 2: your own ChatGPT app
OpenAI says merchants who want deeper integrations and native experiences can build ChatGPT apps. Its example is Walmart, whose in-ChatGPT app supports account linking, loyalty and Walmart payments. OpenAI's developer documentation describes these integrations as an MCP server that gives ChatGPT tools, with an optional interface, submitted for review before they are listed in the ChatGPT directory.
For most D2C brands this is not the first step. An app makes sense when you have something a product listing cannot carry, such as a loyalty programme, a fit quiz or a subscription, and the engineering time to maintain it.
Route 3: the open web
ChatGPT also reads public web pages. Shopify notes that products can reach AI channels through web crawling, indexing and feeds you share for other purposes, so turning off Catalog access does not fully hide a store. This route is why your product pages, policies and reviews still matter even when the Catalog route is working.
What MCP and UCP mean for a Shopify store
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. Its own documentation compares it to a USB-C port for AI applications: one standard way to plug a model into data and tools.
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) sits on top of that for shopping. Shopify describes UCP as an open standard it co-developed with Google, covering cart creation, checkout, payment and post-purchase.
Shopify's Storefront Catalog MCP is where the two meet. According to Shopify's developer documentation:
Every Shopify store exposes an endpoint at
/api/ucp/mcpon its own domain. It offers three tools:
search_catalogfor free-text product search,lookup_catalogfor up to 10 products or variants at once, andget_productfor full details of one product with options and availability. It implements the UCP Catalog capability, and each request carries a link to the calling agent's UCP profile.
It serves one merchant. For discovery across many stores, Shopify points developers to its Global Catalog MCP.
In plain terms: an AI agent that knows your store's address can ask it for products in a standard way, and get back the same catalogue data your storefront shows. You do not have to build anything for this to exist. What you control is the quality of the data it returns.
Shopify also serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt files for every store automatically, and you can customise them with Liquid templates. These are separate from Shopify Catalog. They are a short written guide to your store for AI agents, so it is worth checking that they say what you want.
Who can sell in ChatGPT through Shopify
Shopify's help centre lists these conditions for the ChatGPT channel:
Customers must be in the US. Your store can be based outside the US. Shopify's June 2026 guide to agentic commerce says merchants who sell to US buyers are eligible regardless of store location.
Your products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog. The Agentic section of your admin shows either a product count or an "Ineligible" warning with the reasons.
Your policies must be filled in. Terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy, in Settings > Policies.
You agree to Shopify's Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms.
Some products are excluded. B2B-only products are not supported, and products in OpenAI's list of prohibited products and services do not appear.
Legal disclosures go early. Shopify asks merchants to include them in the first 6,000 characters of the product description.
For Indian D2C brands, the practical reading is this: if you ship to the US, the ChatGPT channel can sell for you there. If your buyers are in India, ChatGPT still answers their shopping questions, but it builds those answers from the open web and other sources rather than this Shopify channel. Either way, what is written on your store is the raw material.
The settings you control
Agentic settings live under Sales channels > Agentic in the Shopify admin. By default, "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is on, which keeps your products available to agentic channels and enrols you in future ones automatically.

Opt out of ChatGPT only. Turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me", open ChatGPT, turn off "Shopify Catalog access" and save. Shopify says it can take up to 7 days before your product data stops being shared, and that this does not affect other platforms such as Shop.
Hide a single product everywhere. Set its status to Unlisted. Shopify warns this also removes it from sitemaps, search engines and your store's own search, so it is a blunt tool.
Fix where product text comes from. If your real descriptions or categories live in custom fields, Shopify Catalog Mapping can pull them from metafields, metaobjects, tag prefixes or title delimiters.
Group variants so a product with many sizes or colours appears as one listing, and choose whether compare-at prices are shared so agents can show sale pricing.
Crawlers are a separate lever. Rules in
robots.txt.liquidaffect open-web discovery only, not Catalog syndication, and Shopify notes that crawlers are not guaranteed to follow them.
For most brands the right default is to stay in. Opting out does not stop ChatGPT talking about your products. It only removes the most accurate, continuously updated source it has.
What to fix so ChatGPT describes your products correctly
Shopify says Catalog lists eligible products with their title, description, options, images, price and availability, and updates continuously. That is good for stock and price. It also means every weakness in your product data is passed straight to ChatGPT. Start here:
Write titles that name the product, not the campaign. "Linen camp-collar shirt, sage" tells an engine what it is. "The Riviera" does not.
Put the buying facts in the description as text. Material, fit, size range, care, what is in the box, delivery time and who it is for. ChatGPT compares products side by side on attributes like these, so a missing fact is a missing column.
Use the right Shopify product category. It is one of the fields Catalog reads by default.
Make variants complete. Every size and colour with its own availability, so an agent does not suggest a size you do not have.
Fill in your policies properly. Your return and refund policy is a requirement for the channel, and shoppers ask about returns, delivery and cash on delivery before they buy.
Check your agents.md and llms.txt. Read what Shopify generates for your store and edit the template if it is thin or out of date.
Then check what ChatGPT says. Ask it the questions your buyers ask, and compare each answer with your live store: price, stock, materials, sizes and policies.

Ads, apps and what does not buy placement
Two things often get mixed up with the Shopify channel.
ChatGPT Ads are a separate product. OpenAI said on 21 October 2026 that ads are available in 89 countries, appear only on the Free and Go plans, are clearly labelled and separate from ChatGPT's answers, and that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Paying for ads does not change whether your products are recommended in an answer.
A ChatGPT app is optional. Being in Shopify Catalog already makes your products discoverable. Build an app only when there is an experience you cannot get from a listing and your own checkout.

Where Eldor fits
Shopify gets your products into ChatGPT. It does not tell you what ChatGPT then says about them, or whether that is true. That is the gap Eldor's agent readiness work covers. Eldor installs as a native Shopify app, runs the prompts your shoppers ask on each AI engine every week, records who gets named and which sources are cited, and compares each answer with your live store to flag wrong prices, stock and policies. It then fixes the product data behind those answers by filling missing attributes and rewriting thin product pages. On the Growth plan, Eldor's agent storefront gives AI shopping agents a structured way to read your catalogue and act on your store, built on open protocols such as MCP and UCP.

FAQ
Are Shopify products in ChatGPT by default?
Yes, for eligible stores. Shopify's help centre says the ChatGPT channel is active by default and products are discovered through Shopify Catalog with no action needed. OpenAI says no additional work is required from individual Shopify merchants.
Do I need a ChatGPT app or an MCP server to sell in ChatGPT?
No. Shopify Catalog handles discovery, and shoppers buy on your own online store checkout. A ChatGPT app is optional, for brands that want a deeper experience such as account linking or loyalty.
What is Shopify's Storefront MCP?
It is an endpoint on every Shopify store, at /api/ucp/mcp, that lets AI agents search one store's catalogue with three tools: search_catalog, lookup_catalog and get_product. It follows the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard Shopify co-developed with Google.
Can Indian Shopify stores sell in ChatGPT?
Shopify's ChatGPT channel serves customers in the US, and the store itself can be based outside the US. An Indian brand that sells to US buyers can be eligible. For buyers in India, ChatGPT builds answers from the open web and other sources, so product pages and policies still matter.
How do I stop my products appearing in ChatGPT?
In Sales channels > Agentic, turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me", open ChatGPT, turn off Shopify Catalog access and save. It can take up to 7 days. Products may still appear from the open web unless you set them to Unlisted, which also hides them from search engines.
Does paying for ChatGPT Ads improve my product recommendations?
No. OpenAI says ads are labelled, kept separate from answers, and that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
